The initiative has been shaped through the dedication of many community leaders. Among them is Steve Smith, FAIA, who has championed community development efforts since 1999 and has long advocated for projects that strengthen neighborhoods through thoughtful planning and collaboration. His commitment has helped lay the groundwork for the current initiative.

Working alongside him is Professor Sungho Kim, whose leadership and vision have inspired broad community support for creating a cultural institution that reflects both the history and the future of Korean Americans in the region.

Community leaders note that the importance of cultural understanding has been reinforced by significant moments in American history, including the 1992 Los Angeles civil unrest and periods of community tension in North St. Louis County. These experiences underscore the value of education, dialogue, and meaningful partnerships in building stronger, more inclusive communities.

The proposed Korean American Cultural Center seeks to become a place where those values are put into action—bringing together people of diverse backgrounds through educational programs, cultural celebrations, youth initiatives, leadership development, and public engagement.

The vision has attracted support from a broad coalition of organizations, including the Global Korean Foundation (GKF), the St. Louis Korean American Association (KAA), the Asian American Chamber of Commerce of St. Louis (AACC), Washington University in St. Louis, Saint Louis University, Foundry Commercial, and numerous civic and community organizations. Together, these partners are working to establish a center that will enrich the cultural landscape of the St. Louis metropolitan region while strengthening ties between Korean Americans and the wider community.

Organizers emphasize that the Korean American Cultural Center belongs to the entire community. As planning continues, residents, businesses, educational institutions, philanthropic organizations, and public leaders are invited to participate in shaping a center that will preserve Korean heritage while fostering greater understanding among all cultures.

Although the journey is only beginning, supporters believe the Korean American Cultural Center has the potential to become one of the region's most significant cultural and educational institutions—a lasting legacy that celebrates diversity, inspires future generations, and reflects the collaborative spirit that defines St. Louis.

Through shared vision, partnership, and community engagement, the dream of a permanent Korean American Cultural Center is moving one step closer to reality.
